节后的春运高峰，江城火车站走出来两个在火车上相识的农村青年马少飞和林秀芝。马少飞不甘心在一个小镇上当一辈子乡村教师，来江城寻梦，因一时找不到工作而陷入窘境。他的同学陆鸣，追求江城房地产巨头江云浦的女儿江玫，遭到江家反对，请出马少飞帮忙，马少飞由此认识了江云浦的秘书苏曼。林秀芝也来自农村，因家庭贫困而放弃了上大学的机会后，母亲让她到同江城办民工学校当教师，并寻找生身父亲。马少飞在苏曼的帮助下在股市上掘到了第一桶金，买下了民工子弟学校，开设了新的公司，却又受人陷害，身陷囹圄。马少飞出事后，林秀芝以最大的坚韧，做民工学校的义务教师，艰难地维持着学校的正常运转。几经磨难风雨后，马少飞决定放弃投机梦，顺应时代潮流，到乡村去办一所学校，实现当代青年真正的人生价值。。Birds of paradise are one of David Attenborough's lifelong passions.
